how to do you go about getting technology for cooking . like getting stove, etc in farming. I can find nothing on this and its driving me crazy trying to figure it out.
You have to unlock advanced cooking in tech-tree
list of technologies:
Hi mglee061,
The “Research Overview” at top right of screen will display all your research requirements.
Hover the mouse pointer over each requirement will show you a outline of what is released once that has been researched.
It takes a while, but “Advanced Cooking” and “Grain Processing” will release the different cooking tools 
Both crystals and scrolls are needed to complete the study.
